Martial Arts for Law Enforcement Officers
Feb 08, 2022At the onset of the pandemic, it was clear that marital arts schools needed multiple and alternative income streams in order to survive the crisis. Income streams require time to cultivate, as we need to sow the seeds before we can pluck the fruit. One area in particular that we shifted our focus to was training law enforcement agencies.
My pitch to the police: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sBcqBOhcWMk
The pivot seemed to make the most sense since news of police brutality was blanketing mainstream media at the time and law enforcement officers were in desperate need of some new policing tactics. Moreover, while students and their families were not permitted to work and forced to tighten their belts so to speak, government agencies were living high on the hog getting their coffers filled with cash. So, we decided to set our sights and get some government contracts.
It has been nearly 20 months but we finally can see some seedlings beginning to take root. After sending dozens of unsolicited emails and phone calls, we finally had a sit down with the Commander in charge of all officer training at the Metrpolitan Police Department (MDP) to discuss the possibility of BETA Academy becoming the go-to-facility for DC police officer’s defensive tactics training. We don’t count our chickens before they hatch but we are confident that this partnership will bear fruit in the not too distant future.
Government moves at its own pace so we had to be persistent, even to go as far as to make personalized website to sell them on the idea of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu as an integral part of police training. Interesting enough, we learned from our meeting that if an officer has to go hand-to-hand in a fight for your life type of situation, then all the rules go out the window. In other words, officers need to learn how to strike as if their lives depend on it which opens the door for Muay Thai and other striking academies to provide training options to the law enforcement as well.

If you are looking for opportunities to develop other income streams for your martial arts school, then I suggest you contact your local law enforcement agency and make some introductions. What have you got to lose?
